ECSL promotes and encourages research on subjects proposed by the Board and ECSL members. The first research ever carried out by the centre concerned the legal protection of remote-sensing data. Since then, workshops and conferences have been organised on this as well as many other topics and research has been carried out in areas such as intellectual property rights in outer space.

ECSL also participates in numerous conferences, many of which are organised by the National Points of Contact (NPOC).

ECSL also supports research by students, either by helping them to obtain material or by promoting their work.
