The ESA Convention (ESA SP-1300)
The European Space Agency is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver ever more benefits to all the citizens of Europe.
ESA now has eighteen Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country.
The Agency’s projects are designed to find out more about the Earth, its immediate space environment, the Solar System and the Universe, as well as to develop satellite-based technologies and services while elaborating and implementing the appropriate industrial policy. ESA also works closely with space organisations outside Europe to share the benefits of space with the whole of mankind.
Space spurs research, innovation, and technological developments. Space is the place where future meets present.
To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Agency, we published the ESA Convention in the twelve languages used in the ESA Member States. This will allow people around Europe to better understand the mechanisms through which ESA functions and is successful.
ESA has evolved and continues to evolve, enhancing the benefits delivered by space systems to more and more Member States and their citizens. The Convention was visionary enough to permit such evolutions.
