| | | | | | | | | Grindelwald, Switzerland | | Build a satellite map
Take a large-scale map and compare it with a satellite image. Produce a small satellite map to be used by tourists and to be printed as a picture postcard to be sent to friends or to schools you have links with.
Why not do the exercise by selecting the tourist resort of Grindelwald in Switzerland?
 | | | Satellite image of Grindelwald | There are plenty of images and maps of the area that you can acquire for yourself:
- A satellite image of the area extracted from the Image mosaic of Landsat TM scenes (right)
- Sheets of the topographic maps at 1:100 000 scale (below)
- Photographs (below)
Compare the topographic map to the satellite image.

Once you have identified some important features, think about how you could annotate the satellite image with appropriate text.
Limit yourself to a few elements only, in order not to complicate the image.
Significant features for annotation are urban settlements and any other tourist attraction. Name the peaks visible from the village and from the nearby mountains that one can reach by cable car or on foot.
Search for information on the Internet at the following addresses: http://www.grindelwald.ch/
If you live in the area seen in the Alps satellite image and want to generate a tourist map or a picture postcard of your hometown or of any other place you wish to visit, look at the satellite image of the Alps, zoom into it, find the place and download that portion of the image. The map you need can probably be found in your school or on the internet. If not, just rely on your own knowledge!
