Shillong and Guwahati - introduction

The eye in the sky: A tale of two cities

Cities tend to grow over time, often beyond nature's limits. Often, certain unwanted changes creep in. These changes include land cover changes, loss of open space and greenery, pollution, and traffic congestion. As the world’s population becomes increasingly urban, changes to city environments are partly inevitable, and perhaps nowhere more apparent than in South Asia where urban population densities spiral.

This case study looks at land use changes in Shillong and Guwahati, and the niggling problems that confront the two cities.
