In May and June 1995, not only was Norway (Østlandet, Trysil, Glomma and Gudbrandsdalen) extensively flooded, but also Northern and Central Sweden experienced record-breaking floods.

Norway and Sweden experienced record-breaking floods in May and June 1995

The total damage from the floods were estimated at 1.3 to 1.5 billion Norwegian Crowns (NKK), of which damage to property constituted approximately 800 million NKK.

This should be compared to the normal average annual cost of flood damage in Norway of approximately 200 million NKK.

Which principal causes contributed to the alarming proportions of the 1995 floods?

The floods in May and June 1995 caused a lot of damage to proper

The floods caused a lot of damage to property

Did the population of the area, through their actions, inadvertently cause the floods?

This project will explore how GIS and remote sensing data can help analyse the conditions that caused the floods.

Damage:

  • 7,000 persons evacuated
  • 10,000 persons in rescue work
  • 140 km2 cultivated land flooded
  • 1,000,000m3 soil eroded
  • 470 km railway line interrupted
  • loss of one human life
