Exercise 6: A multidisciplinary workshop

The books on this dramatic event and the documentary “ALIVE!” have to do with deep human values and ethics. Not only does it teach us about the heart of the Andes, it makes us reflect on the dilemmas people face when in extreme situations.

The workshop we propose should be approached from a Social Sciences point of view.

After reading one of the books written about this tragedy, or after seeing the documentary “ALIVE!”, work in small teams and discuss the following points:

1. What type of personality did the different plane passengers have?

2. Who were the group leaders before and after the accident? What personality characteristics define their leadership?

3. What do you consider was the most intense situation they experienced after the accident? Why was it so extreme? What kind of ethics were involved in making their decision? What would your team have done in their place?

4. Which values helped the group survive? Why?

5. Which values/principles had to be reassessed in this situation? Which ones became irrelevant? Identify scenes from the book or movie that confirm your findings.

6. If you had to summarise the miracle of the Andes survivors in 3 key factors, what would they be? Do you think that those factors could be applicable to other situations? Which ones?

7. Compare your findings with those of the other teams in the class. What are your final conclusions?
