Entering the icy waters

The 'Kapitan Khlebnikov' icebreaker reached the ice limit on 16 November 2003, at about 60 degrees South and at a Longitude of 73 degrees East.

This is the sight that awaited them when they woke up that morning.

Didier reported that there were many patches of brash ice, but there was also a lot of ice-free area.

From the satellite we can identify these patches as grey zones. Some smaller icebergs are also visible as bright points.
