On 22 December 1972, two of the survivors, Fernando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, were seen walking by Chilean muleteer Sergio Catalán. They were in position 34º47’51” S 70º28’45”W.

On the Landsat image, mark the location of the wreckage, as well as the position the survivors were in when they encountered Sergio Catalán.

Make an estimate of the distance they walked, and of the obstacles they encountered.

Use Google Earth to assess the height differences. By reading the report on the official Alive in the Andes website, you will find out how many days they walked before meeting someone.

5. For how many days did they actually walk before meeting the muleteer?

6. What is your overall conclusion about the decision the survivors made as to when and in which direction to walk to look for help?
