The Galileo Mission - GIOVE

GIOVE, Galileo In-Orbit validation Element

Galileo, a joint initiative of ESA and the European Commission, will be Europe’s own satellite navigation system providing a highly accurate global positioning service under civilian control for the benefit of citizens throughout the world. Using state-of-the European art technology, Galileo will improve transport systems, emergency services, environmental monitoring and research and will also play a key role in assisting civil engineering.

GIOVE A, the first step for the Galileo system, was launched in 2005 and a second satellite, Giove B, will be launched in 2008 to test critical technologies and the most accurate atomic clock ever flown in space.
