Europe goes to Mars

Since arriving in its final orbit, Mars Express has provided breathtaking 3D images and invaluable scientific data about Mars and its geology, atmosphere, surface environment, traces of water and potential signs of life.

Europe discovers a new world

The ESA/NASA/ASI Cassini-Huygens mission travelled seven years to reach Saturn and Titan. The story of this exciting journey, together with Huygens’s first images of Titan, a new and exotic world, is presented here in pictures.

Our living planet

From their unique vantage point in space satellites provide highly accurate views of the various components of the Earth system – its land, ice, atmosphere, biosphere and oceans – and how these processes interact and influence each other. A sequence of global datasets compiled 5 years after the launch of Envisat.

Land

Billions of years of geological movement, atmospheric weathering and sustained biological activity have left the Earth with the most varied terrain in the solar system. Satellite data allow us to classify types of land cover at global level, map forests, deserts, water bodies, agricultural land and urban areas and precisely measure surface topography.

Ice

The cryosphere, the place where snow and ice form on Earth, is both influenced by and has a major influence on climate. By continuously monitoring the entire cryosphere from space, we can chart alterations in response to climate, and look for warning signs of changes in snow or ice cover.

Atmosphere

This slideshow shows how Earth observation satellites can help monitor our atmosphere detecting holes in the thinning ozone layer and providing important information on atmospheric gases associated with climate change and pollution.

Oceans

The oceans cover seven-tenths of the Earth's surface. Reservoirs of heat and carbon they regulate global climate. Today satellites give us the first accurate global views of the seas, mapping sea-surface height, surface temperature, plankton and currents.

Global Monitoring

Under the leadership of the European Commission, Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) has been established to fulfil the growing need amongst European policy-makers to access accurate and timely information services to better manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security.
