Sputnik 1
On 4 October 1957, Sputnik 1 was hurled into orbit atop a modified intercontinental ballistic missile, from Launch Pad 1 at Baikonur.

04.10.02. Baikonur celebrates the anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite to be launched into orbit. This historic launch took place at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, in what is now Kazakhstan, at 22:28 Moscow time on 4 October 1957. Preparations are now under way at Baikonur for the launch of ESA's Integral satellite on 17.10.02.

The removal of “red tag items”
2.10.02 Removal of 'red tag'items which have to be removed before flight. Here the mobile access platform, affectionately known as the 'map' is positionned to remove the covers protecting Integral’s coded masks. Launch is scheduled for 17 October 2002 from Baikonur in Kazakhstan.
