Devised by a team of scientists under joint French-German leadership, SPI will gauge gamma-ray energies with exceptional precision. It uses a coded mask. Participants: Germany and France, also Belgium, Spain, United Kingdom, Italy, and United States.

The sharpest gamma-ray images to this day will come from IBIS which is developed by an Italian-led team. It also uses a coded mask. Participants: Italy, also Switzerland, Germany, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Poland, and United States.
