Pits and tectonic grabens in Phlegethon Catena

9 February 2006

Download:
 HI-RES JPEG (Size: 3078 kb)  HI-RES TIFF (Size: 51 287 kb)
This perspective view, looking down and to the north, was taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft, shows pits and tectonic ‘grabens’ in the Phlegethon Catena region of Mars.

The HRSC obtained this image on 29 December 2004 during orbit 1217 with a ground resolution of approximately 11.9 metres per pixel. The scene shows the region centred at approximately 33.9° South and 253.1° East. North is at the top.

This map shows the location of the scenes in the region of Phlegethon Catena, centred at approximately 33.9° South and 253.1° East.

Located south-east of the Alba Patera volcano, Phlegethon Catena is a region exhibiting a high density of tectonic grabens.
