ESA's SSA programme: watching for hazards from space

The SSA programme is enabling Europe to detect hazards to critical space infrastructure. This artist's impression illustrates how radars, telescopes and networks on the ground can work in unison to detect space hazards including debris in orbit, harmful space weather and near-Earth objects.

The SSA programme is enabling Europe to detect hazards to critical space and ground infrastructure. This artist's impression illustrates the three main 'segments', or areas of activity, for SSA: space surveillance and tracking of debris objects (SST), detechion of space weather (SWE) and searching for near-Earth objects (NEOs).
