Fitness and Sport Maintaining our bodies in good physical shape is important. Medical space research has pioneered many methods and devices for monitoring and keeping astronauts healthy and strong in the weightless environment of space.
Some of these technologies are already being used on Earth for health care and many other space technologies are also finding uses in the fitness domain. For instance, solutions based on space technologies are helping the disabled to participate in sports at competitive levels and assisting them to enjoy a better quality of life. An exercise machine for astronauts is being developed into a portable home fitness device and if your skis seem better then it is probably because of space technology. | | | | | | | | | | Plastic fantastic - bringing space composites down to Earth Innovative uses for plastics, rubber and their derivatives will be on display next week in Düsseldorf, at the world's leading trade fair for plastics and rubber, K2004. A team from ESA will be present to show visitors how these commonplace materials can be used in space – and how this can lead to new technology for use on Earth.

| | | | | | | | | | Space tech on the run – Paralympics record breaker On the final day of the Paralympics German Wojtek Czyz surpassed his wildest dreams by breaking the world record for long jump, earning him his third gold medal. Competing with a space-tech enhanced prosthetic leg, he got the gold in all three of his events, 100 m sprint, 200 m sprint and long jump.

| | | | | | | | | | Space technology hits the slopes Using technology from Europe's space programme ski maker Rossignol hopes to beat the world speed skiing record at Les Arcs Pro Mondial in France next week. Using skis stabilised by a mechanism originally developed for ESA's Rosetta spacecraft, the aim is to reach an astonishing 255 km/h down the slopes.

| | | | | | | | | | 'Spacelift' for Vendée Globe sailor When Marc Thiercelin set out on the Vendée Globe, one of the world’s toughest sailing races, earlier this month, novel space technologies were used to give his six-year-old boat a ‘spacelift’. Lighter batteries, more efficient solar cells and an intelligent energy management system cut critical weight and optimised vital electricity systems. All three were originally developed for Europe's space programmes.

| | | | | | | | | | Airbag to keep windsurfer safe on 8000 km voyage ESA PR 47-2003. Extreme sports adventurer Raphaëla Le Gouvello is about to windsurf 8000 km across the Pacific Ocean - from Peru to Tahiti in 80 days. Her board incorporates a new ‘anti-capsize’ airbag system, the first result of an ESA technology transfer initiative to improve safety for small boats at sea.

| | | | | | | | | | Space-tech at the Paralympics - world record Wojtek Czyz running with a space-tech enhanced prosthetic leg, set a new world record in Athens Saturday in 200 m sprint, adding another gold medal to his 100 m sprint gold from last Tuesday. He completed the 200 m sprint in 26.18 seconds, 22 hundreds of a second faster than the previous world record of 26.40 seconds in June 2002.
