Cars and Trucks
Pioneers in cars were in many cases also pioneers in aeroplanes, so it is not surprising that car design and manufacture have always benefited from the aerospace industry.

Several of the technologies used in the design and manufacture of modern cars and trucks originate in materials and systems developed for applications in space. These are now being used to decrease costs in car manufacture and to improve performance, comfort and safety; some examples: airbags, carbon brakes, navigation systems, vibration damping, insulation, cooling systems and many more all come from space technology.

A pressing concern is the protection of the Earth’s environment; and the cleaner fuels and solar energy used to power satellites are already starting to power cars and buses.

The successful spin-offs described illustrate the increasing impact of the European space industry on car design and manufacture.

Space technology on winners' podium

Once again Henri Pescarolo chose advanced space technology to make his Le Mans racer lighter and faster, and once again his decision proved to be a winner. At last Sunday’s race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, the Pescarolo C60 Hybrid Judd racing car came in second.

Filming the 'green car' speed record

It was an uninspiring grey early morning on 4 November on the southern outskirts of Paris. EuroNews cameras were at the Brétigny flight test centre. But the engine revving up was not a jet fighter but a prototype racing car preparing to break a world record.

‘Space’ car comes fourth at Le Mans

Pescarolo car no. 18 came 4th in this year's 24-hour Le Mans race, thanks to three excellent drivers and a car optimised with advanced technology originally designed for European space programmes.

Nuna II wins the World Solar Challenge
Nuna II breaks all records in the World Solar Challenge!

ESA PR 69-2003. The Dutch solar car Nuna II, using ESA space technology, finished first in the World Solar Challenge, a 3010 km race right across Australia for cars powered by solar energy.

Pescarolo Sport' racing car 2003
Winning racer backed by space technology

Sunday’s latest racing victory at Nogaro, France, underlined a triumphant season for Pescarolo’s team and their new prototype car – improved with European space developed materials.

Pescarolo racing car at Le Mans 2003
Space tech keeps Pescarolo on track at Le Mans

Pescarolo Sport’s use of ESA technology in their two racing cars shaved crucial seconds off every lap at last weekend’s Le Mans marathon 24-hour race, helping to place them into the top ten out of 50 competitors.

Battle for the lead, Sarrazin leads Shimoda
Space technology helps win race at Estoril

Pescarolo Sport won Sunday’s race at Estoril in Portugal, the first in the 7-event FIA Sportscar Championship, helped by technology originally designed for ESA’s space programme.

Bringing the coldness of space to the Sahara

Cooling is key in the Sahara Desert, especially when you’re in the middle of it, trying to win a race.

ESA highlights space in Europe's cars

Advanced space technology is being found more down-to-earth uses – even within the cars driven on Europe's roads.

ESA's stand at 'Le Salon de l'Automobile' in Paris
Space technology geared to the car

From 28 September to 13 October, the European Space Agency (ESA) makes its debut at the Paris Motor Show (Porte de Versailles, Hall 2/2, stand 515). Its presence might seem surprising but on closer analysis is fully justified; over 40 years of breakthroughs and advances have left the space sector ready to play a full role in the car industry.
