12 July 2004 During the EU Council meeting of Ministers of Health, Social Policy, Employment, and Consumer Affairs in June, the importance of eHealth information and communication technologies for health has been acknowledged as beneficial for the Citizen. In line with the TMA Vision. This development is welcomed by the Telemedicine Alliance, whose Vision, recently formulated and submitted to the EC (IST Directorate), proposes a Citizen-Centred eHealth system based on utilizing interoperable ICT on all levels of health delivery. eHealth Action Plan The Council also noted that people are travelling more and more, and have a “number of rights, entitlements and expectations when accessing healthcare” in another EU Member State. EU Ministers consequently agreed on the importance of supporting further initiatives on patient mobility and healthcare developments within the EU, which is naturally facilitated by an EU-wide platform for eHealth and is integral to the philosophy outlined by the TMA’s Vision. Such an eHealth platform is both virtual and real: It comprises broadband access in remote as well as populated regions on the one hand, and interoperable access and standards on the other hand, so that patients and health providers can access data across regions even where the health systems are different. | |
