| ||The ECSS-E-40 Tailoring Tool Wizard|
What is a tailoring?
The ECSS-E40-Part 1B standard defines a set of requirements for developing software in the scope of a space system project.
It was defined by the European Cooperation for Space Standardization committee. But because these requirements cover a wide range of applications, some of them may not be applicable for small, low-cost projects. The selection process of the appropriate requirements for a particular project is called a tailoring. To be accurate, a tailoring must follow a certain number of rules and generally has to be done with the help of a standard expert. The Tailoring Tool Wizard, developed by the BSSC is a tool assistant that helps a project manager to do most of this task himself. This tool implements pre-defined tailoring guidelines.
How does it work?
- The technology behind the E40 Tailoring Tool is a generic engine that handles form analysis.
- At startup, the tool downloads a set of questions and rules in order to process the tailoring;
- The user answers to the questions and the tool determines the applicable E40 requirements;
- The generated report contains also a list of required documentation for each phase of the project;
- A tailoring justification is produced using inputs on project characteristics and risk assessment.
How to get it?
The Tailoring Tool Wizard can be downloaded for free from the right menu, a license agreement is included in the installer (latest version is 220.127.116.11).
How to get support?
To get help with your E40 tailoring please contact bssc @ esa.int (remove the blanks).
Can I use the Tailoring Tool Wizard to tailor my own standard?
Yes! The techology used by the Tailoring Tool Wizard is a generic and very flexible engine that can handle many kinds of questionnaires.
The questions and rules to generate the report are expressed in a structured ASN.1/XML-encoded document that is automatically processed by the tool.
For more information on how to write your own questionnaire, please contact bssc @ esa.int (remove the blanks)
