The Space Environments and Effects section is involved in numerous collaborations. These collaborations aim to improve the definition of research and development directions and exchange of results and data. Apart from explicit activities mentioned here, the section organises meetings, workshops and conferences for knowledge exchange, many of which are jointly organised with collaborators.
Space Environments and Effects Network of Technical Competences
The Space Environments and Effects Network of Technical Competences (SEENoTC) is a network of interested national agencies or representatives, including European space industry represented by EUROSPACE, which coordinates the research and development and other technical work in the areas of space radiation and space plasma environments and effects. Technical areas of concern are identified and actions prioritised. A joint roadmap for work in the area is established, maintained and implemented through both ESA and national budgets. Area addressed include:
  • in-orbit technological experiments,
  • ground facilities,
  • analysis and modelling infrastructures
Liaisons with the European Space Components Coordination (ESCC)/Components Technology Board (CTB)/Radiation Working group (RWG), SWWT and SPINE are established.  
Network of Centres Space Debris
The Network of Centres (NoC) approach aims at closer coordination between the European National Space Agencies and ESA. Several NoC pilot projects have been established, one of which covers the field of Space Debris.
Geant4 space users community
The Geant4 particle transport toolkit is jointly developed by a world-wide collaboration and is intended for a range of applications in high energetic particles, medical field, and space physics and engineering. In the recent years, space and astrophysics has become a significant user category, with applications ranging from instrument and detector response verification to space radiation shielding optimisation, component effects, support of scientific studies, and analysis of biological effects. The collaboration is formally established and managed via an oversight board. Members contribute explicitly idientified ways, with identified development recources.
Spacecraft Plasma Interactions Network in Europe
The objective of the Spacecraft Plasma Interactions Network in Europe (SPINE) is to share resources and to coordinate efforts in all domains related to the interaction of spacecraft with the space plasma, including spacecraft charging. Members of the network are laboratories and companies in Europe.
Space Weather Working Team
The Space Weather Working Team (SWWT) is a forum open to European experts in a variety of both scientific and application oriented fields relating to space weather.

The SWWT plays an important role in advising ESA on space weather strategy. It also acts as a forum for discussion amongst the European space weather community. It is responsible for promoting coordinated European space weather activities at both national and industry levels. The SWWT seeks to identify and discuss potential collaborations and/or synergies with other structures or organisations.

The SWWT will advise ESA about the response to the pilot project activities observed within the scientific and user communities. The SWWT will also assist ESA in evaluating the lessons learned from the operation of the pilot project and how these changes can be implemented within a strategy for any future space weather programme.
Space Weather European Network
The products resulting from the Service Development Activities (SDAs) developed as part of ESA's Space Weather Applications Pilot Project are coordinated to form the Space Weather European NETwork (SWENET). This addresses the need to provide industry and others with the means to access space weather services, applications and data efficiently, addressing all space weather aspects for a wide range of users.
European Cooperation for Space Standards
The European Cooperation for Space Standards (ECSS), is producing a comprehensive set of standards for space engineering in Europe.

The Space Environments and Effects section is chairing the work on the development of the Space Environment standard (ECSS-E-10-04A) and is coordinating its update. It also sponsored the integration of this standard into the Space Environment Information System (Spenvis). The section is also chairing the work on two other standards; the E-10-12 Methods for the Calculation of Radiation Effects, and E-20-06 Spacecraft-Plasma Interactions.
