Closing gaps between academia and industry is needed in Europe to excel European competitiveness
The ESA Telerobotics & Haptics Laboratory is a new engineering research laboratory of the European Space Agency. Our Laboratory has been called into existence officially in April 2011, in a dedicated building at ESTEC with the aim to perform fundamental research, engineering developments and project work in telerobotics, human-robot interfaces and haptics together with academic institutions and industry.
At ESA’s Telerobotics & Haptics Laboratory, advanced mechatronic devices are being developed for teleoperation and haptics for space applications. We study and research how to optimize the hardware, software and control interfaces between humans and a variety of robotic systems for more intuitive remote operations by human operators.
Our laboratory aims to develop and build practical end-to-end systems, in order to learn by fundamental research and practical study how to continuously improve and optimise bilateral control systems and their individual components.
All research in the laboratory is centred on the concept of true ‘human compatibility’. In practice this means, all systems are optimised for human operator usage. Control as well as mechatronics solutions are targeted towards the optimal support of human functionality, anatomy and motor control capabilities in a remote task. In addition, improving robustness and quality of related mechatronics systems is a key scope of our designs.
It is the goal of the Telerobotics & Haptics Laboratory to develop advanced technologies for enabling future space missions and to maintain a strong engineering and fundamental research competence within ESA and it’s partners in the European and International Space sector.
