Single-phase mechanically-pumped fluid loops


The mechanically-driven single-phase fluid loop developments for large telecommunication satellites were initiated early 2000s in the frame of ARTES 8 programme.

This loop transfers the heat directly from the payload (those mounted on the satellite non-radiating shelves inside the satellite) to several large deployable radiators.

The application of this device on a very large telecommunication satellite with large deployable radiators has been considered in comparison with the relatively complex three-dimensional heat pipe networks connected to several loop-heat-pipe-based deployable radiators.

ESA currently funds the Qualification Model of the components of this type of fluid loop (MPFL). The baselined pump design directly benefits from the large heritage from the previous ESA pump development activities in the 1980s and 1990s.
