Long-term Medical Survey (LTMS)
Project evolution steps:
- Definition study of a prototype
- Development and Validation of the prototype
- Use in Concordia
- Upgrade of the prototype towards a final version
- Enhancement of the LTMS for outdoor activities
Goals / Description:
To monitor the health status of the Antarctic Station Concordia crew by:
- collecting physiological and psychological data in a simple and usable manner, and
- transmitting data to distant control centres
The idea is to study adaptation of Human Beings to Antarctic environments and define criterions to select the best psycho-physiological profiles for isolated missions.
Status of project steps:
- In 2003, ESA placed two parallel contracts for definition studies of a prototype of the LTMS. - Completed
- Based on the results of these studies, ESA initiated in 2005 the development of the LTMS prototype - In progress
- LTMS system will be tested in isolated and extreme environments such as the Concordia Station - Foreseen in 2008
- LTMS capabilities will be extended to the monitoring of people carrying out outdoor activities in extreme environements - Foreseen
