SMOS: Europas neuester Umweltsatellit

Download:
 HI-RES MPG (Size: 3 122 kb)
The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission carries state-of-the-art technology in the form of a sophisticated interferometric radiometer called MIRAS. Its large Y-shaped antenna detects microwave radiation emitted from the surface of the Earth and translates the data into maps of soil moisture and ocean salinity.

SMOS payload in the Large Space Simulator

 HI-RES JPEG (Size: 1422 kb)
SMOS payload undergoing testing in the Large Space Simulator at ESA-ESTEC in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. A 'solar beam', six metres in diameter, was repeatedly shone onto instrument. The instrument was also subjected to low temperatures of deep space. These tests simulated the different intensities of solar radiation the satellite will experience in orbit.
