Digital data – here today, gone tomorrow

14 August 2006

Digital data
The large-scale project called CASPAR (Cultural, Artistic and Scientific knowledge for Preservation, Access and Retrieval) will build a pioneering framework to support the end-to-end preservation lifecycle for digital information based on existing and emerging standards. Within CASPAR, selected ESA satellite data streams will be the first objects to demonstrate how the proposed preservation platform architecture can be applied to handle complex digital objects. ESA will not only provide the necessary satellite data and associated information but also the operational experience and demonstration infrastructure.

Envisat sensing the Earth
Earth observation (EO) data acquired by satellites is increasing at an exponential rate, with many images able to be used for numerous applications. Sharing and reusing these data are beneficial for decision makers, sustainable development planners and humanitarian and emergency managers in need of quick, reliable and up-to-date user-friendly cartographic products as a basis for planning and monitoring their activities.

Mayan city in the Yucatan peninsula
In 2003 ESA launched an Open Initiative with UNESCO to use Earth Observation to help developing nations more effectively protect World Heritage sites on their territory. The UNESCO World Heritage list include monuments or landscapes judged to be of 'exceptional universal value' in either cultural or natural terms.
