Ariane-5 ECA launch

19 January 2006
The past 12 months have been some of the most extraordinary in ESA's 30-year history. In 2005 ESA landed on Titan, sent a probe to Venus and discovered ice on Mars; five Ariane 5 launches took place, ESA astronauts visited the ISS and at the end of the year GIOVE, Europe’s first global navigation system satellite, was placed into orbit. 2006 looks set to be another exciting year. Venus Express will arrive in April, two ESA astronauts will visit the ISS, SMART 1 will land on the moon and the 2nd satellite in the Galileo global navigation system will be launched, as well as the weather and climate observation satellite Metop for Eumetsat. Ariane 5 is back on track to regain its position as market leader in commercial launches and Corot, the first space mission capable of detecting rocky planets outside our solar system, will also be launched in 2006.
