| Animation illustrating the mission scenario for Europe's Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV). ATV launches from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The 20.7 tonne ATV is well protected at the top of Ariane 5 during a three-minute high-pressure aerodynamic ascent. 100 minutes after lift-off, the ATV becomes a fully automatic spaceship navigating towards the International Space Station (ISS). The ATV uses its eye-like rendezvous sensors to dock precisely and safely with the ISS. ATV becomes an extension of the Station. The 45 m³ pressurised module delivers up to 7.2 tonnes of equipment, fuel, food, water and air for the crew. ATV uses up to 4.7 tonnes of propellant to raise the ISS altitude which naturally decreases with the residual atmospheric drag. After 6 months, ATV, loaded with 6.5 tonnes of waste, separates from ISS and fully burns out during a guided and controlled re-entry high over the Pacific Ocean.

| Born November 19, 1958, in Longeville-les-Metz, France, but considers Toulouse, France, to be his hometown. Married to the former Laurence Boulanger. They have two children. He enjoys racquet sports, skill games, canyoning, skiing, and flying activities such as boomerang, frisbee, kites. His and her parents reside near Paris, France.
In 1991, he trained in Star City, Moscow, on the Soyuz and Mir systems. In 1992, he joined the astronaut corps of the European Space Agency (ESA) at the European Astronaut Center EAC in Cologne.
Clervoy was detached to the NASA Johnson Space Center/Houston in August 1992 to gain the Space Shuttle mission specialist qualifications. In between his space flights, Clervoy was assigned as flight software verification lead in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL) and as robotics display design lead for Shuttle and Station. After his third spaceflight, he provided collateral duties in the NASA-JSC Astronaut Office on International Space Station display integration lead within the Space Station Operations Branch.

| Ariane 5 makes an on-time liftoff from Europe’s Spaceport ELA-3 launch zone as it begins the successful mission to orbit Superbird-7 and AMC-21. This wide-angle view also shows a portion of the assembly and integration area for Ariane 5, which is partly visible in the foreground at right.
