Dragon Symposium highlights success of projects

The participants at the third Dragon Symposium, being held from 10-14 July 2006 in Lijiang city in the Yunnan Province of the People’s Republic of China.

Study areas for Dragon projects
 
This map shows the study areas for 13 of the Dragon projects. The Beijing and Qingdao study areas were added in October 2005 as these are the locations for the 2008 Olympic games for which demonstration products, such as air quality, sea state, meteorology, land use and urban heat environment, are being provided.

Mosaic of Northeast China
 
This mosaic image is based on on ERS-1 and -2 combined data and covers a large region of Northeast China. More than 500 radar images acquired between 1995 and 1997 were used to generate the mosaic. In the false colour composite, red corresponds to the ERS-1 and -2 coherence (matching data), green to the ERS-1 SAR intensity and blue to the ERS-1 and -2 intensity difference.

Forests appear in green, agricultural areas appear in orange or yellow, depending on whether the images were acquired in winter or not. Steppe and marsh land surfaces along the Mongolian border appear in red. The green patches in the centre of these regions correspond to the frozen surface of lakes Hulun Nur and Buir Nur.

Multi-temporal image, acquired within the Dragon Programme, showing seasonal changes in Lake Poyang’s water levels, based on Envisat's Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) acquisitions between 29 January and 21 August 2005. Dark blue represents perennial water bodies for the concerned period, bright blue the flooded area during August and red spots the drying up or vegetation growth in wet depressions.
