Galileo’s new technology will revolutionise our transport systems, increasing safety and improving efficiency; this will make for better quality of life and less pollution in our cities. Galileo will also bring benefits in other aspects of everyday life, with precision farming raising yields, improved information for emergency services speeding up response times, and more reliable and accurate time signals underpinning our most vital computer and communications networks.

Model of a G-WaLe floater. The G-WaLe system by etamax, developed in cooperation with DHI Wasser & Umwelt, offers improved prediction of flooding using Galileo. Holger Sdunnus, CEO of etamax, was the European Satellite Navigation Competition finalist for the region of Hesse in 2006. For more information http://www.etamax.de.

CarbonDiem, a personal carbon calculator that won the Prague/Czech Republic regional prize in the European Satellite Navigation 2007 Competition, sponsored by ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme. It uses satellite navigation data to track distance and method of travel every time a journey is made, calculates the generation of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a result of the travel and displays the data on a mobile phone giving details of the carbon footprint. Travellers can then easier optimise their travel method to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.

Miramap, a former 'incubatee' at ESA's Business Incubator in ESTEC, the Netherlands, is using space technology to monitor the moisture content of e.g. the Dutch water barrier from an airplane to detail weak spots. An unmanned helicopter, as seen in the picture, or a small aircraft is used to scan areas in the Netherlands.

European Satellite Navigation Competition 2008
The European Satellite Navigation Competition starts round 5 with new partner regions and other thematic focus points. Under the patronage of the Bavarian State Ministry for Economics, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology and with the support of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the ICT trade show SYSTEMS, Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen gave the starting shot for an international ideas competition in 2004, which aimed at the early development of applications that are based on satellite navigation systems available today, like for example GPS, and which should gain a significant enhancement from Galileo.
