ESA's old EO missions perform sophisticated new tricks

ESA's Envisat & ERS-2 provided data for this image

An interferometric image of the Po river delta showing an area 96km x 112km generated from data acquired on 31 December 2008 by ESA's Envisat and ERS-2 satellites. The image is a three-colour composite of coherence (red), average backscattering (green) and backscatter change (blue).

Digital elevation models compared

An interferometric image of the Po river delta showing an area 96 km x 112 km generated from data acquired on 31 December 2008 by ESA's Envisat and ERS-2 satellites. Color indicates topographic phase with a color cycle corresponding to a phase cycle.

Envisat/ERS-2 digital elevation models compared to SRTM

Comparison of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for a 50 km x 35 km area of the Po River Delta, Italy.

The DEM shown in the left image was derived from highly accurate interferometric data gathered during tandem observations by ESA's ERS-2 and Envisat (7 Nov 2007). The image to the right shows the interpolated Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEM heights over the same area using the identical very fine color scale.

In the SRTM DEM (showing 3-arc-second resolution equivalent to approx. 90m resolution), areas with forest and buildings are shown in pink indicating heights equal to or larger than + 1m above sea level (masl).
