After graduating from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1981, Christer worked at the European Research Centre on Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva. In 1992 he was selected to join the European Astronaut Corps based at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Germany.

In 1981 Christer competed in the World Frisbee Championship, and even took one of his personal frisbees to the International Space Station!

In 2006, Christer flew as Mission Specialist on Space Shuttle Discovery to the International Space Station. He became the first Swedish astronaut to fly in space. During this mission, called Celsius, Christer took part in three spacewalks.

Christer is now the Head of Science and Application Division in the Human Spaceflight and Exploration department at ESA.

His total time spent in space is 26 days, 17 hours and 38 minutes!
