ADM-Aeolus mission ground segment

The major functions of the ground segment are to:
  • monitor and control the satellite, including the payload and the ground-segment elements
  • receive the instrument data from the satellite, and
  • process, disseminate and archive the data and products, and provide for their retrieval.
The key requirements state that the Level 1 products shall be available at the Science Data Processing Centre within 3 hours of observation. These Level 1 data are the wind profile data, direct from the satellite. For more information on the different data products that Aeolus-ADM will produce, see the data section of this site.

Weather prediction centres will assimilate these wind data into numerical prediction models and the key output will improve weather forecasting. Other level 2 data products will be generated by atmospheric science centres.

Ground-station visibility from Kiruna and Barrow
Ground-station visibility from Kiruna and Barrow for 400 km orbit.
Ground stations To meet the timeliness requirements for the selected orbit two data reception stations are required such as:

  • Kiruna (Sweden)
  • Barrow (Alsaska).
