Helping to predict the weather is the most mature application of Earth Observation. Over the last four decades satellites have radically improved the accuracy of weather forecasts, in particular in data sparse areas such as the tropics and Southern Hemisphere. Near-real time meteorological satellite images are at the heart of the daily weather bulletins watched by millions across Europe and the world.
4 February 2010 Europe’s series of Meteosat satellites has been improving the accuracy of weather forecasts for over 30 years. Meteosat-6 has recently broken the record for the operational life of one of these robust missions.
7 July 2009 Using radiation measurements obtained by the MetOp satellite, scientists have produced the first complete map of global ammonia emissions – a pollutant of key environmental concern. The map, based on observations throughout 2008, shows inaccuracies in current ammonia inventories and identifies new hotspots.
