Overview
 
Helping to predict the weather is the most mature application of Earth Observation. Over the last four decades satellites have radically improved the accuracy of weather forecasts, in particular in data sparse areas such as the tropics and Southern Hemisphere. Near-real time meteorological satellite images are at the heart of the daily weather bulletins watched by millions across Europe and the world.

7 February 2012   An intensive, two-day test of the third Meteosat Second Generation satellite saw ESA mission controllers in Germany connecting their computers to the satellite at a manufacturing facility in France. The test was a milestone in the lead up to launch this summer.

Clear forecast for weather-monitoring mission
 
8 November 2011   International partners are looking ahead to Europe's second polar-orbiting mission dedicated to operational meteorology – MetOp-B is set for launch next May.
