IceSAR campaign provides glimpse of future Sentinel-1 images over ice

An airborne radar sea-ice image taken over Storfjorden, Svalbard on Friday 16 March 2007. The radar configuration used (C-Band VV and VH polarisations) is very similar to the future Sentinel-1 sensor. Different ice structures and floes are clearly visible in the radar image through texture and colour.

Scientists in sea-survival clothing standing next to the Polar 2 aircraft from the Alfred Wegner Institute (AWI). During the IceSAR campaign in Svalbard, Polar 2 and the radar aircraft are coordinated to take visible and near infrared images of sea ice conditions. This will help interpret and classify sea ice types in the radar images during detailed analysis of the campaign data.

GPS base station
 
A GPS base station has been installed near the airport to provide the scientists with high precision location data. This is especially important as some flights with the radar require a location accuracy of 1m or better.
