Security services

GMES Security services are at a relatively early stage of development, but some precursor EU and National projects have been set up that cover aspects such as maritime and border surveillance, humanitarian aid efforts and early warning and prevention of conflict situations.

Some products and pre-operational services have been already developed in the following areas:
  • Maritime surveillance – this includes surveillance of sea borders in Europe, maritime safety, illegal immigration, and illegal trafficking.

  • Border surveillance – this includes the surveillance of land borders and critical infrastructure such as pipelines.

  • Support of EU external actions – this includes conflict prevention, population monitoring and resources monitoring, such as water security.

The EU-funded G-MOSAIC project is responsible for the development of the pre-operational GMES security service. It will provide the EU with intelligence data that can be applied to early warning and crisis prevention, crisis management and rapid interventions in hot spots around the world for issues such as weapons proliferation, fight for natural resources, population pressure, land degradation, and illegal activities.

There are three other security-related projects, all developing further capabilities in the maritime surveillance domain:

  • Integrated and advanced maritime surveillance, NEREIDS

  • Simulator for moving target indication scenarios, SIMTISYS

  • Decision support modules for maritime surveillance, DOLPHIN

Complementing these, the GSE ESA-funded MARitime Security Service project, MARISS, offers integrated monitoring maritime security services in different European regions using satellite data combined with in situ data to support improved decision-making on maritime security issues.

The services take the form of vessel detection reports and maps, and support clandestine immigration control and illegal traffic control. The project has been extended to the end of 2012.
