In just two years ESA's GOCE gravity satellite has gathered enough data to map Earth's gravity with unprecedented detail. On 31 March, a press briefing focusing on the results of the mission will be streamed live.
The press briefing will be broadcast at 11.15–12.30 CEST (09:15–10:30 GMT) from the Technische Universität München in Germany. The session will include an update on the mission, and presentation of the results and their applications. It can be followed live on ESA's GOCE website.
The briefing will take place during the Fourth International GOCE User Workshop, where scientists and data users from all over the world are gathering to hear about the satellite and the data products now available.
ESA's Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer mission was launched in 2009 to map variations in Earth’s gravity with extreme detail and accuracy.
Two years in orbit have resulted in a unique model of the 'geoid' – the surface of an ideal global ocean in the absence of tides and currents, defined only by gravity.
The geoid is crucial for deriving accurate measurements of ocean circulation, sea-level change and also to gain a deeper understanding of the processes occurring inside Earth.
