ESA campaign reveals glimpse of future Sentinel-3 imagery

MERIS images over Sen3Exp test sites

Location of the four Sen3Exp campaign test sites marked on MERIS images that were acquired during the campaign window. Ground measurements, airborne data and satellite images were taken of Barrax in Spain, San Rossore in Italy, Boussole ocean buoy in the Ligurian Sea and the Acqua Alta Oceanographic Tower (AAOT) in the Adriatic Sea. The image shows the location of the sites and two MERIS images taken during the campaign.

Hyperspectral image of San Rossore, Italy

Airborne Hyperspectral System (AHS) image of the San Rossore test site taken during the Sen3Exp campaign. Quick-look false-colour composite showing bands 4, 8 and 15 in red, green and blue, respectively. No geometric correction has been applied so the image shows some distortion due to aircraft roll, pitch and yaw. The full-size image shows an area of around 18×5.5 km.

Sentinel-3 is being developed by ESA for the European Global Monitoring for Environment and Security programme. The mission's main objective is to measure sea-surface topography using radar altimetry, sea- and land-surface temperature using an advanced visible/thermal radiometer and ocean- and land-surface colour using a visible spectrometer.

Airborne Systems Assembly

Hyperspectral imaging spectrometers installed on board INTA’s CASA-212-200 aircraft ready for the Sen3Exp airborne campaign. The Airborne Hyperspectral System (AHS) occupies the left-hand port; the Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI-1500i, left) and Shortwave Infrared Airborne Spectrographic Imager (SASI-600, right) occupy the right-hand port.

Ground team at the Barrax test site

Ground, atmospheric and meteorological measurements being taken at the Barrax test site in Spain during the Sen3Exp campaign. A sun photometer is in the foreground and in the background on the left-hand side is a permanent automated lysimeter.

Acqua Alta Oceanographic Tower

Aqua Alta Oceanographic Tower in the northern Adriatic Sea.

Radiometric measurements of tree canopy

Radiometric measurements of the tree canopy at the San Rossore test site in Italy were taken from a cherry picker during the Sen3Exp campaign.
