Overview   Under the leadership of the European Commission, Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) has been established to fulfil the growing need amongst European policy-makers to access accurate and timely information services to better manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security.   Sentinel-1, the first Earth observation satellite to be built for Europe’s Global Monitoring for Environment and Security programme.   Europe's Global Monitoring for Environment and Security programme sets out to fulfil the growing need amongst European policy-makers, businesses, scientists and individuals to access timely accurate information services. By delivering vast amounts of Earth observation data through a unified system, this innovative programme starts a new chapter in the way we manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security for a safer and more sustainable future.
