10 November 2006 Today, EUMETSAT reports that the Space Environment Monitor (SEM-2) instrument carried on MetOp-A has been successfully switched on. Initial analysis shows that all telemetries are within the expected limits and the instrument is functioning nominally. The SEM is a multi-channel charge-particle spectrometer which senses the flux of charged particles at the satellite altitude, and thus contributes to the knowledge of solar-terrestrial environment. SEM data are used to reduce the impact of solar outbursts on power distribution and communication systems as well as on human beings. The SEM instrument is provided to EUMETSAT by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the USA.
