CryoSat environmental testing over – preparations for shipment to launch site about to begin

CryoSat in the acoustic chamber

A view of the CryoSat satellite in the acoustic chamber at IABG. The microphones around the spacecraft were used to control and monitor the acoustic environment during the tests. The grey boxes, which house accelerometers, are used to collect data on the levels of stress that the satellite endures.

CryoSat being installed in the thermal chamber

CryoSat being installed in the thermal chamber at IABG. The panel at the front simulates solar radiation energy reflected from the surface to the Earth - the albedo, and radiation coming from the Earth. Care is being taken to ensure that the satellite will rotate correctly later during the test programme.

CryoSat in the thermal chamber

CryoSat in the thermal chamber where the lights that simulate the Sun are switched on. The light is reflected towards the spacecraft by mirrors.
