Within ESA's Living Planet Programme two types of Earth Observation mission have been adopted: Earth Explorers, which focus on research and Earth Watches, which are protype operational missions serving operational applications. Earth Explorers fall into two categories: 'Core' and 'Opportunity'. Core Missions respond directly to specific areas of public concern and are selected through widespread consultation within the research and scientific communities. Opportunity Missions are smaller, low-cost satellites and are quick to implement.  »»»
