Satellite overview

Metop is comprised of two major modules: the Service Module and Payload Module.

Service Module

The Service Module (SVM) design is largely derived from SPOT 5/Envisat programmes. It provides the main satellite support functions, such as: command and control, communications with the ground, power, attitude and orbit control, and propulsion. It also interfaces with the launcher.

Payload Module

The Payload Module (PLM) is derived from the Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT). It accommodates the Metop instruments and associated payload support equipment (data management and communications, electrical distribution).

Splitting the satellite into two modules enables a convenient physical and functional separation between the SVM subsystems and the instrument dedicated equipment. The interface decoupling at module level facilitates parallel development and integration of service and payload modules. It also allows for a schedule-efficient satellite integration programme where only the minimum of system level activities is needed for final verification.
