|  | The Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment–2 (GOME-2) is a spectrometer that collects light arriving from the Sun-illuminated Earth's atmosphere or a direct view to the Sun and decomposes it into its spectral components. The recorded spectra are used to derive a detailed picture of the atmospheric content and profile of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, water vapour, oxygen / oxygen dimmer, bromine oxide and other gases.
ESA and Eumetsat are jointly developing GOME-2 for operational meteorology and climate monitoring on the MetOp satellite. It is an enhanced successor to GOME-1, launched on ESA's second European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS-2) in 1995.
GOME-2 is developed and built by the instrument prime Galileo Avionica (I) supported by Laben S.p.A. (I), Innoware (DK) and TPD/TNO (NL) under contract to ESA/EUMETSAT. The Ground Processor Prototype is provided by GMV (E) under contract to ESA/EUMETSAT. |
