The ESA Convention (ESA SP-1300)

23 August 2010
Space spurs research, innovation and technological development. Space is where the future meets the present. The European Space Agency is Europe’s gateway to space.

We are shaping the development of Europe’s space capability and ensuring that investment in space continues to deliver ever more benefits to all the citizens of Europe.

ESA now has 18 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country.

ESA's projects are designed to find out more about Earth, its immediate space environment, the Solar System and the Universe, as well as to develop satellite-based technologies and services while elaborating and implementing the appropriate industrial policy. ESA also works closely with space organisations outside Europe to share the benefits of space with the whole of mankind.

To celebrate ESA's 30th Anniversary in 2005, we republished the ESA Convention in the 12 languages of the then ESA Member States to allow people all over Europe to better understand the mechanisms through which we function and are successful.

ESA continues to evolve, enhancing the benefits delivered by space systems to more and more Member States and their citizens. The Convention was visionary enough to permit such evolutions.

Jean-Jacques Dordain
ESA Director General
