Concordia Station Antarctica
Concordia Station in Antarctica
Psychological selection and training support for Concordia

This activity was approved by the Aurora Board of Participants within the Work Plan 2005-2006 and should be initiated by the end of 2005.

Selection and training of crews will become essential for future long-duration spaceflight due to the limitations of real-time interaction with the ground.

The Antarctic research station Concordia presents an analogue environment for many aspects of long-duration spaceflight/Mars missions. Involvement in the Concordia Station provides a way to gain relevant experience in preparation of future missions, through participating in crew selection and training processes for the winter-over crews.

This activity will cover ESA involvement (or that of ESA selected experts) in aspects of the psychological selection and training process, such as collocation of the candidate crew and field exercises.

The activity will consist of participation of experts in Concordia crew selection and training procedures and eventually of potential organisational aspects of this process (such as field exercises).
