| | | | | | | | | ESA astronaut André Kuipers in the centrifuge at Star City | | Preparation for centrifuge validation
This activity was approved by the Aurora Board of Participants within the Work Plan 2005-2006 and should be initiated by the end of 2005.
As a promising alternative for the microgravity countermeasures currently employed, a short arm centrifuge has been designed for ground based testing. To date insufficient knowledge exists on the detailed characteristics of the stimulus that should be provided with the centrifuge, which would minimise the application time and maximise efficiency and subject comfort. It is foreseen to build, install, check out and provide maintenance for the short arm human centrifuge. In addition two short duration bed rest studies will be needed in order to refine the parameters for the use of the centrifuge as countermeasure (at least) for the cardiovascular effects of (simulated) microgravity.
In order to be able to run these studies in the proper programme period without significant delays it is necessary to spend some effort in 2005 preparing these studies, including for example selection of appropriate protocols, approval of ethics committees and selection of test subjects.
The activity should undertake the following activities: installation and check out of the short arm human centrifuge, support for protocol selection, approval of ethics committee, selection of test subjects and general organisational preparation of the studies foreseen for the next programme phase.
