A colourful selection of posters and calendars illustrating the past three decades of ESA missions and programmes, and highlighting activities at ESOC, the European Space Operations Centre, Darmstadt, Germany.
This gallery was selected from archives kept at ESOC and from a collection maintained by Klaus Lenhart, who retired from the Centre in 2000 after 37 years.
Excellent perspective view captured by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft showing a section of the Ophir Chasma, a northern part of the Valles Marineris canyon. This image was taken during orbit 334 in April 2004 with a ground resolution of approximately 36 metres per pixel. The displayed region is located at about longitude 288° East and latitude 4° South. Image first published 27 September 2004.
This close-up perspective view was calculated from the digital terrain model derived from the HRSC stereo channels. It shows a view looking north towards the 5000-metre high northern scarp with its piles of collapsed material, seen at the top of the image. The smooth, rounded Baetis Mensa ridge can be seen on the left.
Mars Express was launched on 2 June 2003 and entered Mars orbit on 25 December 2003. It is controlled from ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany.
