Upper composite is hoisted to the top of the tower

The upper composite, which holds the SMOS and Proba-2 satellites, is hoisted to the top of the service tower and then onto the lower stages of the Rockot launcher. SMOS and Proba-2 were installed in the launch tower on 27 October.

Upper composite arrives by train

The upper composite was transported by rail from the cleanroom in the integration facilities to the launch pad at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. It took around four hours for the train to make the 5 km journey.

ESA’s Earth Explorer SMOS satellite will make global observations of soil moisture and ocean salinity. The data will result in a better understanding of the water cycle and, in particular, the exchange processes between Earth’s surfaces and the atmosphere.
