Technology Transfer Process

Technology transfer is the process of using technology, expertise, know-how or facilities for a purpose for which they were not originally intended. It implies that a technology developed for one sector can be used in a totally different area.

The transfer process consists of extracting and marketing suitable space technologies, services and applications. This is done by analysing the needs of non-space applications and identifying suitable space technologies to meet these needs.

ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office (TTPO) has the overall responsibility for the technology transfer process.

TTPO is part of the Systems, Software and Technology Synthesis Department under the Agency’s Directorate of Technical and Quality Management.

The technology transfer process is carried out in several different ways:

  • by the Technology Transfer Network (TTN) involving technology brokers
  • through the National Technology Transfer Initiatives (NTTI)
  • through opportunities announced on the Technology Forum online market place
  • through a number of other initiatives and specific events.
