"Europe's Mars Express orbiter brought along a lander called Beagle. In addition to its powerful, high-resolution main cameras, Mars Express has a low-tech camera on board that was included for the sole purpose of providing visual confirmation that the Beagle lander had successfully separated from the mother ship. Unfortunately, Beagle was lost. But the little visual monitoring camera still works, and is now being used as a kind of low-res 'webcam' to send back frequent snapshots of the Red Planet."
