Artist's impression of IUE
Artist's impression of the International Ultraviolet Explorer.

Making ultraviolet observations, ranging from comets to quasars, IUE was the world’s longest-lived and one of the most productive satellites ever built. Although IUE produced no images, it provided invaluable data by measuring the energies of ultraviolet rays coming from celestial objects, giving insight into the physiscal conditions in those objects.
